About
The Denver Justice & Peace Committee
Our
Mission
Denver Justice
& Peace Committee (DJPC) is a volunteer organization dedicated
to promoting human rights, economic justice and lasting peace
in Latin America through education, solidarity projects, and
nonviolent activism.
The organization's
goals are to: put a human face on poverty, human rights abuses
and conflict in Latin America, particularly as they affect
indigenous peoples; increase awareness of the ever-widening
social and economic injustice in both the South and North;
promote discussion of these issues and encourage people to
become proponents of social change; and promote sustainable
communities and nonviolence.
What
we do in Support of Peace and Justice in Latin America
CAMINOS
Since 1996, DJPC’s Colorado/Maya
Accompaniment Project of the Sierra (CAMINOS) has
sent human rights observers to live and work in Guatemala,
has responded to human rights abuses through an urgent action
network and has facilitated exchanges between people of Guatemala
and the US. Currently, CAMINOS
sponsors human rights observers who accompany witnesses seeking
justice in legal cases against former military dictators.
The
Promesa Partnership
A
project overseen by the CAMINOS committee that seeks to improve
overall health and primary health care delivery for the isolated
rural village of Teorito, Guatemala, by supporting the community's
own existing health structures, as well as the health workers
who serve as volunteers

The
Salon Series
A monthly event features informative, interactive and stimulating
discussions among people who are concerned about peace and
justice in the world today. Our series began with an exploration
of the framework Transitional Justice affords societies
moving forward from a history of violence and genocide to
a future of justice.

the EVENTS page for a listing of current themes and upcoming
events.
Advocacy
& Nonviolent Activism
We advocate and educate community members and legislators
on the importance and necessity of human rights, non-violence
and social justice considerations in U.S. foreign policy towards
Latin America.
Nonviolence
is at the core of DJPC values. We organize and support non-violent
actions to raise awareness on issues affecting Latin America.
DJPC’s Non-violent Action Campaigns include workshops,
letter-writing, campaigning, and creative action focused around
specific examples of excessive corporate impropriety in Latin
America.

Build
for Peace
Build for Peace
is a work-a-thon (as opposed to the more commonly known
walk-a-thon). Build for Peace volunteers pledge to work
one scheduled day (approximately 5 hours) in service
to a local non-profit organization that offers transitional
housing and programming for families and youth to overcome
domestic violence, homelessness, child abuse and other
family crises. All monies raised go towards DJPC's work
towards peace and justice in Latin America .
Build for Peace is the major fundraising effort for
DJPC and has been an annual event for twelve years.
Monies raised through this effort have provided a significant
portion of our organizational income in past years.
